Rise Studio was one of the premiere photography studios in Rapid City during the first part of the 20th century. Many memorable photos of Rapid City, the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore (examples here) come from that particular studio. I can’t even estimate how many Rise photos crossed my desk in the days when I did the historical photos section for the RCJ.

Last weekend, near the former home of Global Market (it’s a few doors west now), this ancient gilt-glass sign was visible under some chipping paint:

Can’t think what else it would be. Can you?

Ruth, My father (Don) worked for Rise during the building of the Faces. Rise put him on loan to Gutzon Borglum, where he took most, if not all, of the photos of the construction attributed to Rise Studios. He became Gutzon’s unofficial press secretary. He left to work at the RCJ where he retired as Local Advertising Manager after 36 years. His mother (my grandmother) had an apartment above the Rise Studio for many years.

As Bob Hope would say: “Thanks for the Memories.”
