Nostalgia aside, I’m sure the poetry at this Thursday’s Summer Nights at the Dahl poet coffeehouse will outshine all Grease lyrics.

“Braden Bilyeu and other select area poets will take turns performing various forms of spoken word, traditional poetry, and slam poetry throughout the evening,” the event announcement reads.

The works presented won’t be on the level of Shakespeare or Auden, granted, but it probably won’t be just teenagers angsting about how deep and misunderstood they are either.

Whether it will be more fun than watching Barry Gibb across the street mow his lawn is another question altogether. He wears a shirt with a marijuana leaf pattern.

The poet coffeehouse, which is not an open mike (that’s set for Aug. 14), runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and also features concessions and free art activities starting at 6 p.m.

Tell me more, tell me more!

I continue to see and hear Braden Bilyeu’s name regarding musical and poetry performances in the Rapid City area. What can you tell me about his work and style? He must have quite a large following?

I haven’t made it to one of his performances yet, so all I know about Braden was gleaned by looking at his MySpace page earlier today — and the poems posted in the blog entries. They’re long, fluid, rhythmic, and also very passionate and thoughtful and aware. I expect to learn more this Thursday, and I’ll certainly update again then.
